My partner and I have been trying for a baby for 2 years with no success. We’ve been tested at our doctors and it turns out he has a low sperm count (out of two test the results were = 2 million and 6 million sperm) and I have low progesterone (two test results = 10). I need to know if it’s still possible for us to have a child and if there’s anything we can do to increase our chances?
We are 35 both years old and otherwise healthy with a good sex life and I am ovulating every month.
My husband and I have been trying for our first for 3 years now and we are also struggling with male factor infertility. He has a low count (typically between 14mil-20mil and has had counts as low as 11mil) and also poor motility. Obviously there is a chance but not the hugest one. Anything below 20mil is cause for concern.
Have him see a urologist. Our reproductive endocrinologist referred us to a urologist due to his low count. My husband was put on Clomid. Clomid is not just for women, it can be used in men to help increase sperm counts and motility. Men are put on lower doses than women, and are on a daily dose of 25mg daily for 3 months. Our first round didn’t raise his count but improved his motility slightly, so we are giving it a 2nd round now.
He is also on a fertility supplement called Proxeed, made known to us by our urologist. Read about it here:http://proxeed.com/ My husband takes it twice daily, morning and night. He has been on it for a month now, it is to be taken for at least 3 months, with optimum results after 6 months.
Make sure your husband is on a daily vitamin, and my RE recommended a daily dose of 1000mg of vitamins c and e, along with L carnitine, zinc and selenium (these are all things found in Proxeed as well).
To increase your chances, you may want to consider IUI. My husband and I have done 2 IUI’s but both failed. We had 8mil sperm post wash our 1st IUI, and 9mil post wash for our 2nd. A count of at least 5mil is usually wanted for a good shot at a successful IUI, but I have heard of success stories with post wash counts much lower than that. Otherwise you can always resort to IVF.
Try not to have sex daily. With low counts, daily sex is not helping and will not get you pregnant faster. We had to abstain from sex for 5 days per our urologist orders for all of the semen analysis he requested (not the usual 2-3 requested by other dr’s) and my husband typically still only manages an average count of 14mil after saving for 5 days. So if we were to have sex daily, it would get us no where as far as ttc, for fun, sure, but not in the baby making world
So shoot for every 2-3 days if at all possible. Sucky, I know. It also wouldn’t hurt to see the urologist and have him run another semen analysis. Sometimes 2 tests just don’t cut it, cause sperm counts fluctuate A LOT!!
For low progesterone, your dr can prescribe you progesterone cream, progesterone shots, or progesterone vaginal inserts. When we did our 2 IUI’s, I was prescribed vaginal inserts. You can get OTC progesterone creams online and what not, but when you are diagnosed with low progesterone, OTC creams are no where near strong enough a therapy to fix the problem. If you and you partner decide to do fertility treatments in the future such as IUI or IVF, your dr will automatically prescribe you progesterone to support the possible pregnancy.
Tons of luck and baby dust for you
